Catherine Mackey

Mackey's' paintings are inspired by the visual urban experience - whether it is a whole building or a small fragment of a wall. She enjoys incidences of inadvertent beauty created by time, decay, graffiti, signs, and posters. She sees each wall as an architectural palimpsest which records the people who have used them in the past. Her wanderings around the city have led to an interest in the visual fragmentation to be found on plywood hoardings around building sites - this has informed her artistic process. Her previous career as an interior architect left her with a continuing interest in unusual spaces and she has done several bodies of work which focus on abandoned buildings.
