Robert Garrett

Robert Garrett lives San Francisco and works primarily in Night Photography. His early interest in photography stems from pinhole camera he built with his father for an elementary school science fare project in Houston, Texas. Since that time he pursued degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Product Design and is a practicing Product Designer today.

Photography has taken a primary role in his creative life since studying photography at Stanford starting in the late 1990's. There he focused mostly on large format black and white photography of his life and surroundings. More recently his work is almost exclusively shot at night on color transparency film, which allows the work to express as much through the color of light and shadows at night as through form and subject.

He recently exhibited work in the exhibit, "A Night on the Hill," which showcased the Potrero Hill neighborhood of San Francisco and its resident artists. His current work - voyeuristic nocturnal portraits of tract homes in Sun City, AZ, addressing the dark side of the Southwest today - is included in 'The Best of the Nocturnes Online - Celebrating Five Years of Online Exhibits' and was awarded a "Curator's Choice" award in a recent online exhibit, "From Tucson to . . . " - www.thenocturnes.com/exhibits/tucson/awards.htm - juried by William Lesch.
